Our Tribute To Wiltshires’ Heroic & Famous Sons and Daughters
Here we remember those men and women with Wiltshire connections who paid the ultimate sacrifice whilst in the service of their country during both war and peace. This includes civilians who died due to war time action as well as those who died as prisoners of war, and through accident or disease. We also recognise the sacrifices made by the Emergency Services of Wiltshire.
We also remember the events when visitors and Wiltshire folk lost their lives in major disasters within the county, together with traumatic events outside of the county, where those with Wiltshire connections lost their lives.
We also celebrate the lives of individuals connected to the County, who had global, national or county-wide fame for achievement in the arts, sporting, literary, sciences, political. religious and medical fields.
This list below displays these sacrifices and notable events which occurred on this day in history over a period of 7 days, this is the current date and three days either side.

| 24-01-2012 | Wiltshire Notable | 2012 - Upton Lovell - ALTHEA WYNNE, sculptor, and her husband ANTHONY BARRINGTON-BROWN MBE, photographer, were tragically killed in a road traffic accident near their home in Upton Lovell. Born 6 October 1936, Wynne was a lifelong rider and she made a number of equine statues, including three bronze horses to stand by the steps at Minster Court in the City of London, and her final commission of two large bronzes of Windsor Grey horses for Windsor Great Park. Born 13 July 1927, Barrington Brown was a successful photographer, designer and explorer. In 1955–56 he was part of the Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition, which completed a 32,000-mile trip overland from Hyde Park Corner to Singapore, and back. Althea and BB (as he was known) were buried together on February 21st in Upton Lovell churchyard, a few yards from their Wiltshire home. |
| 25-01-1753 | Event - Non-Military | 1753 - Devizes & Potterne - On this day Ruth Pierce of Potterne called upon the name of God to prove that she was not lying during a trade dispute that took place in Devizes Market Place. Ruth claimed to have paid her share for goods bought by Ruth and another two women but had been accused of not having handed over her share of the payment due. Ruth swore that she had and called upon God to strike her down dead should she be lying. Almost immediately Ruth Pierce collapsed and died. The Market Cross in Devizes was erected with a panel telling the story as a warning to future generations to call on the holy name of God to conceal the devices of falsehood and fraud. |
