Sun Inn, Marlborough

Standing in the High Street, near the famous college, the inn dates from Elizabethan times, and is thought to be the oldest in Marlborough.  Most of the records were destroyed in the great fire of 1652, when practically the whole of the High Street was destroyed.  Prior to this there was a row of buildings down the centre of the High Street but these have never been rebuilt.  The old oak beams, panelling and cellar door as seen in the photograph in the Marlborough Gallery above are all original.

St. Mary

The Parish Church of St. Mary

Marlborough St. Mary Photo Gallery

The parish church of  St. Mary was burnt with its town in a great fire in 1653.  With the restoration of the town, for which a national fund was raised, the south arcade of the church was rebuilt in classical style - as good an example as any of Cromwellian church architecture.  The town supported Parliament during the Civil War; the church tower shows the scars of the battle.
